Jim Buehler

Vestry, Class of 2030

Jim Buehler has been a member of the St. Martin’s community since 2013, when his family moved from Atlanta to West Mt. Airy. In Atlanta, he served on the vestry and as chair of the stewardship committee at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany. At St. Martin’s, he has been a member of the stewardship and buildings-and-grounds committees and the “medicine cabinet,”  a group of physicians and public health experts formed at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic to advise the rector, vestry, and parish community on health issues. He is a former member of the board of the Foundation for Health Equity, which provides grants to organizations that operate health-related programs in Germantown and Chestnut Hill, and he is a current member of the board of Healthy NewsWorks, which offers programs in health literacy and health journalism for children in elementary and middle schools in underserved areas in Philadelphia and South Jersey. Jim is a physician trained in pediatrics and preventive medicine. He has over 40 years of experience in the field of public health, including government service at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the Georgia Department of Public Health, the Philadelphia Department of Public—where he served as the City’s Health Commissioner during the latter part of the Nutter Administration, and faculty positions at schools of public health at Emory University in Atlanta and, currently, Drexel University.
