OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE: Grades 7-12
Building on the foundation acquired in the church school program, St. Martin’s adolescents begin to engage reason as they attempt to live with Christian moral values in a culture that does not always support that. To aid that process, we use the ‘Journey to Adulthood’ program for students in grades 6 through 9 which balances biblical study, prayer, rites of passage, outreach ministries, and both serious and playful activities to nurture the whole person during the passage from childhood to adulthood.
In addition to Sunday mornings, there will be periodic gatherings for other activities including overnights, movies, opportunities for community service, and events with other young people from around the Diocese.
Grades 6 & 7 - Rite 13
The Rite 13 curriculum assists young people as they take the first steps of passage away from their families and into their own lives. During these two years, the community acknowledges the gift of gender, celebrates the amazing crea- tive power and potential for these young people, and creates a safe haven for young people to explore and question their beliefs. The Rite 13 leaders are Bill Hixon, Megan Hoffman, and Anita Kinsley.
Grades 8 & 9 - J2A
The J2A curriculum engages youth with the skills and critical thinking involved in adulthood as they continue to
explore areas of faith and spirituality. This year, the youth will focus on community building and participating in
parish ministries and outreach ministry projects. The J2A leaders are Susan Davis, Cheryl Irving, and Michael Prell.
Confirmation
The Rite of Confirmation is reserved for those who have demonstrated their commitment to actively and faithfully
engage the Christian life within the community of faith. Young people active in the parish youth program may apply to be confirmed at any time, but this usually follows the J2A Pilgrimage. (If teenagers have not previously partici- pated in J2A but wish to be confirmed, this class is appropriate for them.) The leaders are Ann Greene and Martha Valciukas.
Acolytes
To serve as an Acolyte is an important ministry that young people can offer in the worship and fellowship at St Mar- tin’s. Young people 3rd or 4th grade and above who are interested in serving as acolytes should contact The Rever- end Beth Hixon, Associate Rector. Training is offered on an as-needed basis for new acolytes.
